Seaweed Cultivation Workshop for University Students and Staff

This workshop for students and staff at Newcastle University brought together ecological learning, practical skills, and critical reflection on the future of sustainable marine industries.

Participants took part in a talk on seaweed cultivation, a tour of PEBL’s growing facilities, a foreshore walk focused on seaweed ecologies, and a hands-on session collecting and
cooking seaweed.

The day combined theory and practice, offering an introduction to seaweed cultivation as both an ecological and economic field. It encouraged participants to think across
environmental issues, food systems, and maritime innovation, while experiencing first-hand the skills, knowledge, and interdisciplinary thinking needed to engage with emerging blue economy sectors.
