Most multiparameter water-quality sondes don't list a price. YSI, In-Situ and Xylem all route buyers to a quote request. That makes it hard to answer a simple question: how much does it actually cost to monitor turbidity, temperature, light and current at a marine farm or restoration site?
A lot of PEBL's work is with species whose value depends on how well they grow in the water: seaweed, shellfish, seagrass. Growth in all three groups comes down to the same small set of physical conditions: how much light reaches the crop, how warm the water is, how much sediment is suspended around it, and how the current moves past it. Turbidity, temperature, light, current speed and current direction are the core parameters behind growth, alongside other factors that matter less consistently across species. Nobody had combined those five in one instrument, so we built GrowProbe to close that gap.

Figures are indicative, converted from published USD list prices at approximate July 2026 exchange rates. Most incumbent sondes are quote-gated in the UK (POA), so these are base-unit prices before sensors, cables and handhelds are added.
What this means in practice: a complete turbidity logger on its own can cost close to three times an entire GrowProbe. A complete current logger costs nearly as much as a GrowProbe and measures only one thing. Building the same five-parameter coverage from separate instruments typically runs £3,500-£8,500+ in hardware alone, before accounting for running five separate deployments and stitching five separate datasets together instead of one.

What GrowProbe doesn't do: it isn't a replacement for a full sonde in every case. It doesn't measure conductivity/salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH or chlorophyll. Its current-speed and current-direction readings are raw tilt-angle output, while turbidity can be fully user-calibrated. If a project needs water chemistry alongside physical conditions, a dedicated sonde is still the right tool for that half of the job.
